DIY Xmas decorations

Great idea Nicos!

LadyWayne is planning to make a wreath from wine corks. It's something she picked up on a course at Le Manoir last year - so untested as yet. We've got bags and bags of corks (not all consumed by us I hasten to add).

Once (and if) she does it, I'll be sure to post here.

I LOVE making Chrimbo stuff - the eggs look very pretty. I might give those a go. Nice thread and some good ideas there!

Nicos, what a brilliant idea. I like the bead threading one. Lauren's room is due for decorating, and beads threaded on wire and hung at the window would catch light and sparkle the way little girls like!!

when i was little we had a bay window where the xmas tree went ....... the tree went up on a table, then we made a mesh hill underneath from string and drawing pins, covered that with white crepe paper, then covered with cotton wool. sprnkle with glitter, and voila a christmas tree on a snowy slope.

get some toilet rolls, cover them with snow, make a head, give them pipe cleaner arms, with silver foil skis and sticks ........ and you have skiing snowmen

kept me occupied for ages making stuff for it........ and it worked on son too

and not totally making your own, but (presumably they still do them) early learning centre used to do sticky loops, that you put together to make chains ...... you can make your own though with foil wrapping paper and glue (don't use pritt stick) and make sure they dry before hanging....... another way to keep the kids occupied for hours.

Last year DD had to make a tree decoration for school using recycled bits....we covered a sheet of newspaper in watered down glue & then rolled up tightly to make a thin tube...let it dry out & cut into little sticks...tied together to make a star/snowflake shape & sprinkled with glitter...then the ones we had more time with i wrapped glittery thread around them(like a spiders web type thing,but still called them snowflakes)...Sorry,not a particularly good explanation..if we make more this year I'll post a pic.They looked better than I've maybe explained!

Freya's primary school used to have a competition every year, they all got sweets for taking part but freya's always had to be the biggest, one year she wanted to make a fireplace and got her grandpa to cut out a large fireplace and she decorated it with cards along the mantlepiece, glasses by the fire, and god knows what else, come to think of it, its still in the loft. Hanging from a hook above the stairs is santa's sleigh complete with reindeer made from toilet rolls with a large bit of polystyrene for the sky with stars moon etc cut out and sprayed with paint. These decorations used to hang in the school hall for a couple of weeks, good job it had high ceilings !!!

Try looking up recipes for 'pepernoten', a traditional Dutch / Germanic gingernut type biccie. Theres tons on google and they're really easy to make.

Taste really nice too

BTW, the pepernoten are best served up with a mug of mulled scrumpy
or 'vin chaud'. So unfortunately you'll have to make some of that too, to go with them...what a shame

As kids at home we used to spend hours making paper chains for hanging up. This year my daughter and I have been busy making and decorating christmas trees, to dangle on cord, and to stick onto home made cards, for friends and family. I do feel that a personal touch is so much more appreciated, even if the tree has feathers!!!
