  • Neighbours nicking my raspberries!

Hi all, got a right dilemma on my hands and would love some advice, the plot next to mine was taken over earlier this year by a really lovely couple, always say hello when we see each other, anyway, in summer the lady asked if she could take a few of the raspberry cane suckers that were growing out of the side of my patch and onto our adjoining path, I said of course - no problem. Then, a few weeks ago somebody had dug up all their huge old cabbages (must have been over 20 of them) and dumped them on my plot, looking at my neighbours plot I could see it was from them. I couldn't believe it!! I put them back on their side and then next thing they had put them all in their compost bin.
Anyway, just been down to the allotment and they have taken 27 raspberry canes from my plot and planted them on their plot! Not only have they taken the few that had sprouted along the path but it looks at though they have kindly 'thinned' my raspberry plot too!!! I think it's pretty damn cheeky to take so many. I never see them to say anything and I don't want to go making a mountain out of a molehill, but would other folk be peed off at this and want some back? very confused!

    best wishes

I would be extremely peed off!!! Do you have a site representative or regular meetings/newsletters? If so mention it to them and let them do the dirty work for you. If not and you don't actually see the neighbours, is there anywhere you could leave them a note (e.g. a shed door) saying that you don't mind them taking stuff outside, but please do not help themselves to anything within your boundary? Difficult situation, I know but something needs to be done ASAP.

Many thanks for all your replies, willl get it sorted asap. I wouldn't dream of taking so many myself, and sometimes find it quite unbelieveable that so called 'friendly' folk can be so rude!

take em, back, then leave them a note, tell them taking a few suckers is one thing, but treating you as one is another.

and in future, if someone asks you for something, say 'of course, i'll do them out for you', that way it's clear they are not to help themselves.

Take them back, and leave a note saying "my mate Two_Sheds says you have have as many of hers as you can dig out, cos she don't like raspberries, and I don't like tealeafs"

i agree its a cheek, your local council will have there address write a letter put it in a stamped envelope and ask the council to forward it onto them, give the council a copy of the letter, take the extra raspberry canes back that there were not supposed to take as only the suckers crossing the path was allowed and mention it in the letter. then you dont have to do an akward confrontation with them. good luck pc

What a cheek last year a chap told me to help myself to some strawberry plants but I only took a few and I checked with him after that I hadnt taken too many and he said take some more if you want so I ended up with fifteen altogether taken whilst he was there. I would never take more than one or two to start with and not from anyone else's patch.
                        Go get em back.

Well, the latest is I went and got them all back! The kids thought it was hilarious, mummy stomping over to the next plot, chuntering away to myself and one by one plucking them out of the ground. They'll have a huge shock when they return to find there lovely new raspberry bed totally bare. I've also e-mailed the chairman of the allotments and told him of the situation. I totally agree with you JackieJ, they shouldn't have taken so many, I think they were after a more productive patch by next year, and so took the big ones too. Over the summer I gave them seeds I'd saved from climing peas and beans - well, I certainly won't be so generous next time - I sure have been a sucker!! Thank-you all for your fab words of support, made me realise it was them in the wrong.

Well done you. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, kids can have a really devilish sense of humour and wicked chuckle too! Hope this is the last of the situation!
