  • Wine flies

I've been plagued by the usual wine/fruit flies this autumn. A bit more than usual to be quite honest.

Cleaned the kitchen, emptied and disinfected the bins, even behind the units.

I'm currently "doing up" the house. The wall cupboards in the kitchen have been taken down and their contents are in large plastic storage boxes.

Today I was looking for a packet of rice I knew I had and lifted a bag of sugar. OMG. I'd put it on top of a butternut squash I'd forgotten about. Rotten b/nutsquash + sugar=flies .

The flies are no longer contained (ish) near the container and are looking for another source of food. THEY WILL GO AWAY won't they? Perleease.

We have the same thing - made tons of damson wine and jam weeks ago and they're still here!!! Getting fewer though...

It's flying down my throat tonight....I've had a particularly long week at work. The subject matter I'm dealing with over the next few weeks is very distressing, but even worse I'm reducing it to a 'process' - it feels wrong and I'm glad the first week is over.

But I digress, what I actually wanted to say was I'm glad your kitchen is on it's way janie!

            Bottoms up!

Fruit flies will vanish when they have nothing to feed on....... DON'T let any over-ripe bananas lay around. That is the preferred food!!!

Are these those stupid little flies with the rounded wings - make no noise when they fly?

The same ones that drown themselves in your wine?

                I hate them!

Fruit flies are tiny. Most people can't really see much of what they look like because they are too small. They DO have an ambition to die happy in wine.....

I soaked a jar full of blackcurrants in brandy this year, I strained the brandy off into a jug last weekend with the aim of serving Kir Royale to friends coming to dinner. I turned my back on the jug and within half an hour about 10 fruit flies were lying dead in it! I had to throw the lot away.

Me too. Far too nice to throw away for a few fruitflies!
