  • The Hanky

Just been giving OH a hand with the ironing and with all my hankies there it got me thinking. I feel nude if I leave the house without a clean hanky, it's like if I've forgotten my keys or something, just doesn't feel right somehow.

At work I keep a box of tissues on my desk, which I use. At home I use the boxed tissues or even the toilet roll but I still have to have my hanky.

My kids however never carry a hanky or even a tissue, unless they have a cold or something.

OH rarely carries a hanky but always has a tissue or two.

    Is it just me?
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

My mother-in-law always carries a hanky. I don't, but usually have a pocket pack of tissues in my bag, though I always had a clean hanky when I was a child - tucked in my sleeve!

I thought hankies were a thing of the past. I use and carry tissues with me everywhere I go. My ex mother-in-law used to boil them and dish cloths in a saucepan and then cook in the same pan horrible put me off using hankies and eating at her house.

I keep a box of tissues on my desk too - and put the used ones into the compost caddy to bring home at weekends (along with fruit cores/peels, and used teabags/coffee grounds).

I have boxes of tissues all over the house (I have allergic rhinitis so tend to sneeze a lot!). I used to use man sized hankies before (I'd use 2 a day in school), but I got so fed up of them being wet and soggy in my pockets, that I switched to paper tissues once I had the means to buy them myself and not have them all used by various others for messing.

I have a couple of really nice hankies (very ladylike ones) that I use for my handbag - along with the pack of paper tissues, especially for "good" occasions. OH has lots of large hankies for his pockets, but I have gone beyond that sized ones now.

Me too, always got tissues at the ready; perhaps now I'm 40 [soon to be 41 - hurrah], I should migrate to proper hankies...I'll have a think about that one over a cuppa.

It may be an age thing. I use tissues at home and usually have some in my bag- or at least two yards of lav. roll- But I always have a cotton hanky too. Must be all those years of being asked-urgently! "Have you got your hanky!!)

Don't use tissues on principal, much prefer hankies, you can wash them and use for years rather than consuming more paper all the time - especially as much of it is bleached and all sorts in production.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I do have a hanky, but don't often take it anywhere (it's bright pink!). I do carry tissues when I have a cold and have a full pack in my bag, now, but have to confess that when doing dirty stuff, the sleeve gets used and the clothes are washed straight from my back anyway.

Oh dear. I'm disgusting, aren't I? Not very practical to get out a tissue, though, when your hands are full or you're riding on the roads...etc.

Thinking on it, when I'm down at the lotties, I carry 2 hankies, well one is a large bandana type, which I use to wipe the sweat out of my eyes and to lift the kettle off the gas.

Can't help but think of Hanky the Christmas Poo (those who have ever seen South Park will know) whenevr someone mentions hankies.

My step-Grandad used to always have hankies, but my Nan always used tissues (stuffed up the sleeves in both cases).

I only ever have tissues if I have a cold - other than that, there's a handy pack in the car. LW always has tissues about her person.

As my name thingy suggests, my snuff box is my constant companion. Taking snuff does mean I regularly have to blow my nose. I always use tissues but believe it or not there are special hankies for the snuff taker. In days gone by they were widely available but now can only be obtained from a few specialist tobbaconists. What makes a hanky a 'snuff hanky? It is usualy larger than average, always has a lot of pattern printed on it and is often brown. I am led to believe that this came about because as you can imagine a used snuff hanky would not be a pretty sight and so the dense patterning and colour would disguise the mess when taking out your hanky in public. That's why I prefer tissues.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.
