  • Drainage for alliums

Ive just purchased some alliums and every where ive read up on how to plant them mentions that they need good drainage, whats the best way to go about this, should i sit the bulbs on grit or mix grit in with the soil??? any help would be appreciated

I was shown to put a couple of good handfuls of grit in the bottom of the hole when you plant them. Did that to mine several years ago now and they're still perfectly happy. You can mix some compost with the soil where you're going to plant them to improve the soil too.

Sorry blue, wasn't very specific was I?!! Put the grit in the bottom of the hole, sit the bulbs on it and then if you need to improve your soil you can add some compost (or even some more grit) to the soil you use to fill the hole in.

They'll come OK for a couple of years even in quite heavy soil but it's worth doing the grit things as explained above will mean the bulbs will last a heck of a lot longer.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
