  • Potatoe planting advice...

I was on the plot yesterday and was given some advice from our non-speaking portuguese neighbour (with hand gestures) on how to plant my seed potatoes.
He recommended slicing inot the potatoe on the opposite side of the pre-chitted root, then planting on its side.
Due to the language barrier i did not understand why this was, can anyone shed any light?

    Thanks Stv

Not sure I understand, you can increase your potato harvest by cutting your seed potatoes in half and using both sides. However the yield and size of potatoes per half does drop.
My only advise on potatoes is don't dig them in too deep, it takes too much effort when you have to dig them back up again. A couple of inches below the surface, and earth up a slight ridge, this way when you do eventually fork in to lift them you dont have to disturb the ground too deeply, potentially damaging spuds in the process.
