  • Livestock on allotments?

I heard on the radio 4 last week about an allotment cooperative that had pigs and chickens on. Is this usual?

We have three sets of chickens on our allotment site I think its possible to keep other animals as well. It depends what the rules are for each site.

Quite a few people on my site keep chooks. We're also allowed ducks and geese, though I don't think anyone has any. Larger livestock aren't permitted though.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery

The Allotment Act 1950 allows of certain forms of livestock (hens (not cocks),rabbits Pigs) to be kept although this can be, restricted by local by-laws.

I don't think Goats are allowed under the act and Cows are def not.

We are allowed to keep chickens, or ducks or geese or rabbits, but not to 'mix and match'. There is a private site near us though that allows all forms of livestock.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Our local byelaws ban any livestock of any kind (Apart form that which turns up uninvited, like pigeons and foxes). I've never seen anyone with bees on any of the sites either, so it may stretch to them too!
