I can't hlep you with your tree I'm afraid but I just wanted to say 'nice to meet you'. Any chance it could be a squirrel?

If it's a clean cut, I'd say it was athing (mammal or bird) rather than an insect. If it ain't a squirrel, then I'd say birds - pigeons, magpies, jackdaws - something of that ilk - are your best bet

Thanks for getting back, cant see squirrels doing this because the tree isnt that big, if a squirrel climbed up my tree the lot would break not just the ends!. Will keep you posted.

Think you may be surprised at where Squirrels can go - they aren't very heavy and are extremely agile, so don't discount the little varmits yet

Hi Alice,

I live next to a biggish mixed wood with an active badger set. We get lots of
visiters, some nice some not so nice. Watched the other night a lovely deer eating my rose buds!!!!!! Noticed yesterday a tip of an apple tree had also been cut the same as my Madlar. They are all clean cuts and the bits are not eaten?

Hello Paulrey, it's the pesky deer that are are biting your trees. The bandits eat everything ! Or bite it, or trample on it. And roses are a fovourite ! And once they've found the goodies they keep coming back for more ! You have all my sympathy. See my posts under Roe Deer for pics and more complaints! There is only one way to keep them out and it's fencing but they can come through the smallest space and they can jump 8 feet ! At the moment my poor husband is out in the rain erecting yet more fencing after discovering their latest maraudings. Good luck and let's know how it goes.

Rat if you want the job the hospitality of the house is yours along with all the venison

I think you might get about six of them.

The only problem with that approach is another six would move in to fill the ecological space

Still going for fencing but an acre is a lot to do. They were in here last night again and this morning I would have got rid of them by fair means or foul. Think We've solved it this time. How many times have I said that . If this fails I'm definately declaring an autonomous republic and getting a gun in. Hope you're a good shot
