  • Storing Carrots

which is the best way to store carrots? I have a couple of sacks and wondered which way was best to store these, and keep them as fresh as possible before use..

Mine are stored in a box full of compost/soil and have kept fine. Snadger leaves his in the ground all winter which is fine if you don't have slug or baby centipede problems.

layer in dry sand after harvesting and keep in a cool dry but frost free place till needed, or dig a hole in the veg plot, line with straw, place the carrots on top, cover with another layer of straw then finally cover with a good thickness of soil. Open to remove carrots when needed but not on frosty days.

Mine have been stored in the ground all winter. I dig up enough fo the next week every weekend and they're doing fine. Although I do have a slug problem they don't seem to have bothered them - well it is winter! The only problems I've had were when they were frozen in the ground and I had to chisel them out and some of them have a bit of frost damage at the tops of them. The only protection they have had is the enviromesh which is still in place from last year and will be providing some insulation.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Mine are stored in a box of compost in the cold greenhouse - they have started regrowing though

I've left mine in the ground all winter for the first time, and they're still fine. I covered them with fleece, pinned down with tent pegs.

so either sand or compost, as in a layer of compost, then a layer of carrots etc?

First necessity, DO NOT WASH THEM!
after that, keep them from 'sweating'.
Buried in dry compost or slightly damp sand, or a clamp, as traditionally used for potatoes. If it is only going to be a few weeks, and they are dry to handle, they will keep in a paper sack.

Just read a tip from the veg box scheme we get.. they said to stand brocolli up in a sturdy glass of water, in the fridge (which will stop them going limp)... and that it also works on carrots too.

Personally, I put them in a zip lock freezer bag and then in the fridge if Ive lifted them, else just in the ground (or if in growbag / sack things, I put them in the greenhouse so they don't freeze AS bad as being outside).

Left in the ground they are just potential fodder for marauding slugs n snails. Better to freeze or store in boxes of dry sand in an airy but frost free place.

Surely the leaves die back when they're ready anyway? Why would you want to cut them off?
