  • Preserving help please!

    Morning all!

    Today I'm making Piccalilli (don't like the stuff myself but it's for the Men in my life) Anyhows, my problem is this... I bought some lids that are plastic coated on the inside, can I still sterilize them in t'oven? Probs a daft question but I don't want to spoil my new lids!

    I think they are okay so long as you put them into a cold oven and then raise the temperature slowly. If you are really worried, pop them in a pan full of boiling water for a while, or use Milton (for baby bottles)

      Thanks Shirley.
      Just been rinsing my veg which have been in brine overnight. OK this is gonna sound daft but I've spent about 10 mins rinsing them and they still taste really salty, I don't know wheather to keep rinsing for longer? I'm not gonna be eating this stuff cause I hate it. But I want my OH, Dad and Grandad to enjoy it!

        Sorry Lainey Lou, no experience of making picallili so I can't help. I wonder if you just don't normally eat salt on food and so are particularly sensitive to the taste? If so, perhaps it wouldn't be noticed by others. I assume you have to cook the veggies so maybe bring them to the boil then rinse and boil again with fresh water the same as for a ham joint?

            Hope it works, can't see why it wouldn't though as it does for ham.
