  • Borlotti beans - storing question

    Hi all

    I need some advice, i have pulled all my berlotti beans off of the stalks, i was told to wait until the pods had all fully turned white and pink. I think some of the bad weather we had the other weekend turned a few brown. The beans inside still feel nice and fat.

    I wanted to have a go at storing the fresh in the freezer, have i missed my chance?

    If i have and now need to dry them all out, when they are ready and stored. How long do they need soaking and how long should they be cooked for?

    Thanks for any advice.

    They're fine for the freezer. Boil for 10 mins before adding to your dish.

    They won't be able to dry unless they're well on their way to dryness already. Soaking & cooking dry beans is the same for any dry bean (overnight soak, 45 mins simmering (ish).

        I don't know what your weather's been like, but I have hardly any dry beans this year. It's been so wet that some of the beans have been germinating inside the pod

          can i ask a question on storing Borlotti

          first pick was really dry, bullet type beans and stored in an air tight container, all looking fine

          second pick, left and left but never really looked like they were going to dry so ended up picking before major weather change so was half way into are they dry enough for storing or should i freeze ???
          a few days have passed, well 5 and they did not look like the bean would dry so i have frozen them
          will they be alright or has my indescision ruined them ?

              Believe me, what Sheds doesn't know about beans, you could write on the back of a postage stamp, I've been eternally grateful for her beany advice and knowledge since the start of joining The Grapevine.

              To completely throw a spanner in the works, Piggletwillie gave me some Siberian Climbing Bean seeds to grow in 2010, which I did, and actually, I'm going to stick my culinary neck out here, and say they are WAY more top drawer than Borlotti Beans, and I never thought anything would ever surpass a Borlotti for me, but it just does.
              I apologise for not patting on the back the very initial originator of those beans, because it could be my favourite Flummy, or one of Piggies contacts over the seas, but, my point is: if you like B.Lotties, you're going to LUV SCB's.....

                Further to that - try Madeira Maroon from himself. Absolutely fabulous climbers for drying and storing over winter.

                  I had some of those I think, via Flummery, but they were Serbian? Or Siberian, not sure now.
                  Anyhoo, they were indeed superb beans. The only ones to rival them production wise are Tiger Eye, which are early to mature, long pods of about 6-7 lovely striped beans (flattish beans).
