Hi
Iwas given a bottle of port a year ago and it remains undrunk, is there anything I can do with it along the lines of sloe gin?

Very funny!
Actually, forgot, have two bottles of the stuff, the same person gave me a bottle two years running.
I can't find a recipe for using it and as it's not a spirit would it preserve fruit?
Have three large bottles of damson gin and vodka on the go so would be nice to do something with this port that's just gathering dust.

It might not be strong enough for preserving fruit. You can make a VERY NICE port wine jelly though. That'll go down a storm (was going to say 'a treat' but scared 55 got me going!)

I like people giving me bottles of port. My mum used to buy us a bottle every Xmas. I Never drink the stuff, but it does wonders to all sorts of foods eg gravy, stews etc - just slosh it in.

OH hates brandy, but loves a drop of port with a bit of decent blue Stilton.

The only time he finds brandy acceptable is when he has an upset stomach. Brandy and port is the sovereign remedy for gippy tum in his opinion.

I just think it tastes delicious.

Oh..never thought of actually drinking it... too many memories from childhood of old ladies with their port and lemon I think.

And from your other suggestions, if Nigella recommends Marsala for adding to nearly all and sundry then port would be a good substitute?
I've got it out now, a Dow's Trademark Reserved and it's actually rather lovely and can imagine it going really well with the Stilton and an apple. Should keep me going till December when I can broach the damson gin.

OK then, thank you, that problem solved, I've also got a bottle of Japanese Sake - any ideas?

Sue

We opened some Port last night (LBV). Lovely. (My OH drinks it at footie matches, rather than lager which makes him run to the loo in an inconvenient manner. Quite sensible I suppose)

Depends on how many pints of port you sup?

Two Sheds
Pity you're so far away, I could have taken your bread machine and sent you my two bottles of port in exchange.

Port and Archers does it for me every time. Apparently (I was told whilst on holiday in Warwickshire) it is an old hunting mix. Two thirds Port mixed with One Third Archers. Certainly warms you up whilst out on your horse on a cold winters day!!

The local shooting party have a snifter of half sloe gin with half cheap white sparling wine in a schooner before blasting away at the pheasants! I'm surprised they ever hit anything!

Apparently according to my OH once opened, a bottle of port is meant to be drunk til emptied!!!

Now is this a true folk-lore, or is it just his excuse?

Rather partial to the odd glass myself - and for OH's 40th I brought him a century of port, (could only afford the half bottles, got 3 bottles left).

I can't think of anything else to do with it apart from drinking it!

Port and strong cheese - heaven!!! I've always thought I should try it in gravy and the like but there never seems to be any left, can't imagine why?!

Mmmmm, never heard of that before but I'm certainly going to give that a try when I get home. Sunday is the day we usually have an afternoon port so, if you don't see me on Sunday night chat, you'll know why

Welcome to the vine btw - what a great way too introduce yourself
