  • Where do I put the drainage holes

I have some tubs which are 50cm. diameter by 35cm. high, which I would like to use for growing veg. in, what I would like to know is the best place to put the drainage holes should I drill holes about 3cm. from the base or drill holes on the base of the tubs.

I'd go for putting them in the base of the tubs. For flower buckets I use an 8 or 10mm drill bit and leave them upturned in the sunshine (if there is any!) to warm up a little before drilling so the plastic is a little less likely to snap and crack.

I put them in the base too. I use sharp phillips screwdriver and puncture the bases with the flower buckets stood on the lawn, aerates the grass at the same time and I've not had one crack on me yet.

I drilled small holes in the bottom of pot noodle pots. Did 3 - 4 at a time with a small bit. Only a couple cracked out of the millions I did.

          Hmm.

Is that some diet fad you have there, or are you just a fussy eater to have millions of pot noodle pots?

Jamie not me! He went through a strange phase of wanting one for 'breakfast' during holidays. It wasn't like he was eating them at 8am more like noon.
I'm half expecting him to want a carload taking to uni with him..

To make a case for holes in the side...........these retain water better as the bottom inch or so will remain damp

Yep ^^ plus if you add a band of grease/vasalin@ below the holes, the slugs have no way in unlike drilling the bottom

If it is plastic pots I find using a drill bit for wood works well.

I have tried both in the side and bottom of containers. I find the major advantage of side drilling is they don't block as easlily.

All the holes I make in plastic are done with a hot piece of copper tube, very quick, no chance of spilts and it leaves a reinforcing ring of plastic around the hole.

I usually put them in the bottom and a few weeks later when they are in use decide that some of them aren't draining well and add some in the sides.

Thank to you all for the comments. I have decided to put them on the side and apply some grease below them as bearded bloke suggests plus taffs comments are noted. Again thanks
