  • Onion Sets

    Hi everybody,
Is today a good time to put my onions in the ground outside? I put compost (not manure) on top in mid February. There hasn't been much worm action so a lot of it is still sitting on top but it seems to be ok.

It is dull and overcast here today and a little bit nippy.

I was going to put them in and cover them with a little cloche to stop the pesky blackbirds from getting to them.

I was going to plant them 6" apart with about 8" between rows. I've got red onions and ordinary white ones. I may have another type but cant remember, will they all be ok in the same bed as the garlic I planted. It is doing very well in the bed and I am really pleased with it.

The bed is very big so there is plenty of room for all of the onions.

Any ideas and feedback would be very much appreciated as i'm a newby and I learning.

        They are in!
        100 white
        100 red
I've done my bit so now its over to nature. Come on Mother Nature do your stuff!
I'm going to get some shallots at weekend and put them in and I've got some spring onions I grew from seed, they can go in soon.
When do you put Leeks into the ground? Shall I use seeds or baby leeks?
My garlic is already in and doing well.
I would put chives in too but I have that growing all over the place so its not necessary for the bed.
Is that everything that goes into the onion bed?
Thank you so much for your help.

My leeks are sat on my classroom window sill, basking in the sunlight. I plan to transplant them outside when they are pencil thick. With the recent warm weather and sunlight, they are no longer as wiry as they were.

You've just about time to sow some leeks Lynne. Either that or hope you can buy some from a farmers market or such like at planting out time.

Thank you again ! Ill get some seeds on Saturday and give it a bash, if that doesn't work ill get some baby ones to grow on. Cover all angles.
I love this place, ask a question, get an answer from people who know and act on it straight away. Love it!

I use Blood Fish and Bone as a dressing for onions. Sprinkle on the soil round the plants before we get the next rains.
