  • A sunny morning "hello" from the Toms family

    Hello everybody,

We've been meaning to do this for a while but by the very nature of having a garden there's never any time to do anything else; other than maybe sit back with a cold beer and admire your work

Well we're the Toms family. That's me (Aron) my partner Amanda (although she'll point out I haven't made her an honest women yet so she's a Green) and our little girl Charlotte. We bought what we hope to be our long term family home 18 months ago and not surprisingly when viewing houses on RightMove the first thing we did was click through to the last images to see what the garden was like; it's amazing how estate agents think that "large garden" means something in which you can put an 8 seater table and maybe a few pots.....wrong.

Well eventually we found our dream! A lovely dormer bungalow only 10 minute walk from town and our local on a 1/4 acre south facing plot and a large man cave to boot. The only down side was that the previous owners liked lawn, lawn and more lawn. So no borders

But on the up side we've found out that before they were divided up in the 60's these gardens were on the site of a former market garden so ontop of a clay subbase we have lovely feritle soil.

So here we are 18 months on, we've made a start but still have a long way to go. We're starting to reap the rewards but know that we've made mistakes, but hey that's half the fun...right.

So we look forward to chatting with you all and sharing any tips and stories along the way.

    Happy gardening!!

Welcome, the Toms family, to the Vine What a super garden you've got there and so lucky to have a south facing plot too. I enjoyed looking at your photos and hope to read more from you on here in time.
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

Thanks Bigmallly, what you can't see is a neighbour's GIGANTIC cedar tree which casts an unfortunate shadow over the veggies about midday, and with our tree at the bottom there is maybe more semi shade than we'd prefer.

I think eventually the veggies will get further and further up the garden as that's in full sun all day.

                  Hi Lumpy,

I'm glad you said that. Can you come round and referee one day?

This misses is worried that the amount of beds proposed is impeding on the amount of space our daughter has to play in.

I think our daughter is a very, very lucky little girl and there's plenty of space for climbing frames still.

Welcome to you all. We love Toms here, even the Green ones
I can see why you chose your property - lovely big garden. All lawn means you have a blank canvas to redesign as you want it to be - I like that!
Have you thought about keeping chickens? I'm sure your daughter would love to help you - whatever her age!

Maybe I should get her to change her name to Red, then maybe she'd be juicier and sweeter!!

OWWW! my head hurts, who new she was so close!!

Another great debate in the house. I say yes but Amanda hasn't worked out I'm right yet

Interestingly the garden at the bottom of us have chickens and I'm surprised how little noise they make (or at least how little we here them up at the house).

Our daughter is only 9 months old so maybe a little early for her. But judging by your username you maybe the man to speak to about chickens. I'm sure we'll chat some more.

Chickens are really quiet as a rule unless they are laying..............it's the Cockerels that are bladdy noisy, especially at 5am..................before you get attacked with a pointy stick, the Chicken Man is a Woman..................

You're so right, BM. I'm one of the quiet hens

Aron, lots of us keep hens so you'll find lots of advice and gentle persuasion here. I've just breakfasted on 2 fried eggs on toast, courtesy of my 2 chooks - although they didn't manage to lay the toast today
