  • Soon to be first time gardener!

    Hi,

I'm soon to be a first time gardener - and I cannot wait!

My fiancé and I were a little reckless today and signed the paperwork to rent a lovely 1930s semi detached house as our first home together, and it has great gardens which I'm most excited about.

My planting will be in containers of varying types, as I also have dog who I'm sure would love to help out with the "watering" given half a chance...!

I'd like to be able to grow things for us to eat, and also weeds (shock horror!) as I have several guinea pigs and a tortoise to feed as well!

My fingers are currently as un-green as they could possibly be...but I'm hoping to change that. Getting out of the city will help I'm sure.

Any tips, info, pointers etc. gratefully received!

Hello and welcome to the Grapevine. There's plenty of advice available here - either by searching or asking
If you could add your approximate location to your profile - it really does help us to understand your local weather conditions.

      Thank you

I'm in Somerset (well, currently Bristol but Somerset soon!!) so no wild extremes of weather. I'll be passing some of my 12 hour shift tomorrow by looking at things that are suitable to be grown in containers and things.

Also, I have to ask...veggiechicken? What's the meaning behind the name?

Somerset ..........very nice!! I'll wave to you from Cardiff
As for my name, that's a very good question!! Its a long time since I picked it - I grew veg and don't eat meat and I kept chooks. I'm almost afraid to ask what lies behind your name

Haha I have several rescued guinea pigs...one of which is called Maggot! This is her...just because she's cute

My current landlady has chickens...I love all animals...except spiders and her chickens!! I'm also vegetarian so it'll be great to hopefully one day eat my own produce!

I also have 5, people think I'm crazy! Mine are all rescues with their own little stories to tell, Maggot's being the saddest! She's a very happy chappy now though!

Carrots will be attempted! G. Pigs can eat bananas in small amounts; too much causes constipation. When that photo was taken, Mags had just come home from having had surgery and banana is her favourite thing ever and perfect for a post-anaesthetic sugar boost!

My mum was bemused as to why she had so many dandelions on her front lawn this year *innocent whistle*

Now...where did them 3,000 dandelion seeds go?
