  • New to Gardening from East Anglia

Hi, I'm Marie and I'm a 40 something gardening newbie, having started in earnest back in the spring.

I've been reading different forums for some time now but really like this one because it seems friendly, down to earth and has lots of sections and topics of interest.

We have a small town garden and I'm mostly interested in growing veg, container growing and polytunnels. I've got pretty addicted to growing things from seed and am currently enjoying tomatoes (the ones which will ripen anyway!) and lollo rossa lettuce. Growing turnips, swede, radish, Swiss chard and other veg all in various stages of development in containers. Biggest fail so far is spring onions which don't want to germinate.

Anyway, I'm sure I will be asking lots of daft questions in future
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

Hello Marie and a big welcome from me too
Don't worry about asking daft questions - we have plenty of daft answers to match
As for your spring onion germination problem - I sowed 3 different types a few weeks back. One germinated really well, the 2nd about 50% and the 3rd Nothing! The ones that didn't germinate were the oldest seeds.
How old were your seeds? Maybe try some fresh ones?

Thanks for the welcomes Oh I will definitely ask daft questions galore!

Ironically the spring onions are called "performer" and in this case have not performed at all brand new packet and I sowed them at the same time as some other items in little seed modules. Everything else came up just fine. I sowed some more today so will see if 2nd time is luckier.
