  • New, but learning fast in Bolton

    Hi everyone,

I'm Pete, and completely new to gardening/growing of any sort really, but having just 'acquired' an allotment plot recently, I'm learning fast!

I'm sharing the plot with my wife's uncle who is keeping poultry, we are currently in the process of building runs and that for them, beg, borrowing, and not quite stealing but you know what I mean, the various bits and bobs needed for this. I have somehow got hold of an old chicken coop, in good condition, for free, so that's a big help!

I'm going to be growing, or at least trying my best to - I have already dug two beds over, and managed to get some spuds variety unknown, but they were given to me by someone I know on the allotment, and also some cabbage, again, unknown variety.
The potatoes are already coming through, after a couple of weeks in the ground, so that's quite exciting for a novice, and the cabbages are looking okay, after only a few days in - I have been told, I'll need to net these though, but having a look at the price of netting, I was quite shocked - I'm sure you more experienced growers, will know the best and cheapest way to help me here?

Our plot is on a south facing slope (which is good?), has just had the surface 'scraped' to clear it of weeds - but I am finding out as I prep beds, that our plot must have been everyone else's tip! Bricks, bottles, carpets, anything anyone on the allotments wanted to get rid of has ended up here over time!

I have my work cut out, but I'm not afraid of that...

I'll be asking loads of questions no doubt, so please be gentle with me!

Hello Pete 3 D's and welcome to the font of all things, whether it's growing, chatting or laughing. Just ask away and someone on here will know the answer.

Yep and this lot are really noisy (not me though tee hee) so snaps of your lottie and hens would be good.

              Hello and welcome!

Some of the big DIY stores are selling of veggie seedlings this week so get yourself down there and bag a couple of bargains! The work will seem easier with stuff growing in all the cleared spaces!
Chickens love to snack on green leafy veg (I've planted loads of kale and spinach for mine) and there's quite a lot you can sow now to crop this autumn.

Also looking forward to some pics.....

                Hi, welcome to the vine!

The cheapest net is scaffold debris netting. I got a 50 metre roll 3 metres wide a couple of years ago for about £30 delivered from t'internet somewhere. Places like screwf1x sell it as well. It keeps the butterflies out as well as the pigeons.

                      Hello and welcome 3D.
We bought our place partly because of the S facing slope and it seems to have made for happy growing
                      Enjoy the Vine.

Thank you for the welcome...I think your plot is in a slightly more picturesque setting than mine!

Hello Pete & welcome to the jungle. As mentioned above, Debris netting is the cheapest route & is very effective. You can get it in various widths & lengths but this will give you an idea.
