  • Konnichiwa from Aberdeen!

    Hello All,
I'm growing Japanese herbs and vegetables on my half allotment and indoor NFT hydroponics up here in Aberdeen. Most of my knowledge is from translating Japanese seed packets, but if there's anyone out there growing this type of thing, please get in touch!
    Cheers,
    John.

Hello John and welcome to the Grapevine.
Could you tell us the names of the Japanese herbs & veg that you are growing - in English I grow some oriental veg but don't really think of them as Japanese.

            Hi Veggiechicken!
It's a bit chilly out in the allotment just now, but am managing to still grow Daikon (similar but crunchier than mooli), gobo (burdock root) and hakusai (chinese leaf) under fleece.
Also my little plantation of kinome trees (similar to szechuan pepper) is still growing slowly.
Indoors in hydroponics I have red and green shiso (perilla), kikuna (edible chrysanthemum), edamame (branch beans), Hokkaido pumpkin, and wasabi!

Hello Jonsan - welcome to the vine. Your growing list sounds fantastic and very intriguing - I knew some Japanese veg could cope with very cold temps but I though it was essentually all of a similar kind e.g the mustard family.
I hope you enjoy the knowledge and lunacy found on here and hope you ask away so that our knowledge can be extended

I'm impressed that you grow wasabi, I was told it's very difficult. Do you agree?

I've been reading Joy Larkcom's "Oriental Vegetables" book, and bought a range of seed of basic things, with the intention of having a go at a broad range of things this year to see how we get on, in the kitchen and at the table, my plan then being to have a refined list of preference for next year - at which point I expect to try more specific varieties. My starting point was just the (fairly narrow) range [of Oriental veg] that Premier Seeds sell.

I saw a wasabi "farm" on Countryfile a week or two back. Hidden away somewhere, growing in a stream. There is a snippet here:
Fresh, British grown Wasabi | Countryfile | The Wasabi Company
and there are some growing details there.

初めまして! I tried growing shiso last year, to no avail. The few seeds that germinated (and that took forever) got eaten so that was that. Did you find it easy to grow? I bought chinese cabbage seeds from Lidl the other day so I may try that. Would love to grow burdock but just don't have the space. Broccoli raab seems quite easy to grow... tried too late in the season last year but will definitely grow it again this year. Debating whether to not to give shiso another go. I was actually worried about it self-seeding and taking over the garden; don't wanna go from one extreme to the other.

I found that UK bought shiso seeds take ages to germinate, approx 1 month even indoors with grow lights. Japanese bought seeds took 1 week to germinate on a a cold window sill.. Guess it just depends on the seeds... I don't think you should worry about shiso taking over your garden, personally my plants have never flowered to produce seeds.
