    Introduce myself



    Hi all my name is Lisa and I've joined the group because I have a new allotment and need all the help I can get.

    I've just turned 40, all my friend think I'm mad but I am totally in love with going to my allotment. When I was young I remember going with my dad to his but sadly he passed away 16 years ago and this is my way of being with Dad again however I am a total novice.....

    I have now organised my plot into 4 sections, got my paths and my shed is being moved tomorrow so I feel like I'm finally getting there but my goodness I really haven't got a clue... So far I have my potatoes and onions in, rhubarb and different berries where there and I also have my poles / canes ready for my peas and beans but my question is I have lots of seeds growing at home beet root, cauliflower, sewed, cabbage and broccoli and they all look ready to be planted can I just go for it and plant them or is it too early as no one else seems to have them in yet? And do I need to put the, under tunnels?

    Help me as I am the new girl on the allotment and all the men seem to be quite amused at me and I feel a little inferior when I am there so this I am hoping is a great way to get advice.

        We would be able too help better if you let us know your location
        Don't let those boys at the allotment intimidate you. I'm sure if you asked there advice they would be happy to help ( just like all of us on here). Lots of us gardeners look intimidating but we're all nice really.................completely mad....but nice

          Hi and welcome to the vine

          Where abouts are you? It is still early to plant things out and quite a bit more if you don't want to fuss with cloches and fleeces and other contraptions to keep them cosy

          The best advice I can give is don't be afraid to ask both here and on your site. It is surprising how generous gardeners can be

            Thanks for the warm welcome I'm in wakefield West Yorkshire sorry forgot part.... It's lovely to get a few replied straight away and feel like I'm really going to enjoy using this forum for help and advice.... I just hope I don't become too annoying with so many questions!!!

              I can't see anyone finding you annoying for asking questions regardless how many you ask, although you may get some stupid answers

                Hi Lisa, and a warm welcome to you!
                It's a great feeling to be 'messing about on the plot'. My Dad was a keen gardener too, sadly I just never got interested but now as a 'grown up' (??) - I'm hooked!!

                I felt a bit nervous about asking heaps of what seemed silly questions when I first joined the Vine, but everyone has always been uber helpful. So, just ask away. Enjoy the giggles too
                Oh yes, get plenty of photos too!

                  I can cope with stupid answers because know doubt some of more questions will be very stupid but at least I'm giving it a go and enjoying myself at the same time ... You never know I may even be able to feed something I grow to the kids!!!! Watch this space

                    as mentioned above, My late father was a professional gardener and loved to spend time in our garden wit roses at the front and veg at the back.
                    Sadly I never shared any interest in his passion and i deeply regret not taking in any of his wealth of knowledge

                          Hi, Lisa, welcome to the vine, you'll find us a happy, optimistic bunch.

                          As you're in Yorkshire I'd hold off planting seedlings outside for a few days at least, because aren't you about to get some frosty nights over the next week? Have you got the seedlings indoors right now, or in a GH or cold frame?

                          Best thing to do is have a wander round your allotment, see what other peeps have already planted out/started growing, that will give you an idea of when you can plant out yourself. And I'm sure all those men would love to be asked for advice, so don't be shy, you'll get more genuine help than you probably expect from them.

                              My seedlings are all in doors and doing well, your right about the weather forecast so I'll wait a while but I'm just excited about planting..... I'll have a wander tomorrow and see what the chaps are doing .... Sunday is always a good day to get some advice and make friends.
