  • How to's + Hints & Tips on how to use the Vine

A thread for us all to aid each other by explaining the way/s we find easiest to achieve goals (posting, searching, etc) within the forums & sometimes for other search engines.
NO chatting please as we want this to be searchable (Mod's please delete non informative posts),to aid this please use the Go Advanced reply tab then put a brief description in the Title box before posting.Cheers
Like in gardening there is invariably more than one way to do a task,so if you do things in a different way to an already posted method please post your way as well.
Shortly I will start another thread (& link it here) where we can ask each other if there is a known method to get a particular task performed expediently.

EDIT: If the answer is not already in this thread, please ask your question In THIS thread

Adding an image/picture to a post

Firstly find your image, right click & from the drop down list & left click copy image location in this case .... http://www.bazingawebdesign.com/site...zinga_logo.png
This can be done under the advanced tab by clicking on the 6th button from the right which will open a box for you to paste the copied link, click ok
Or in the quick reply use the img tag ... type [img] paste link (then type) [/img]

    so .....

Remember that in the advanced tab there is the Preview Post button

      Fair play BB.

Is there a way we can set up an index for the posts that will be received, otherwise we are at the mercy of the inadequate search engine. Perhaps we could update the first post when information is added and put it in some alphabetical order. Is that feasible? I'm up for it.

Adding a video to a post

The video in this case is ... The Seekers - Morningtown Ride - YouTube..
Again there is an option under the advanced tab, copy the URL of the video, click 5th button (insert video) from the right, paste link, click ok
In the quick reply box we use tags [?] link[/?] replacing ? with video,so leaving the brackets open for a moment............

        video]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsqNcZ1JqW8[/video

And now with the brackets closed at both ends ....

        (There yer go Flo )

this will do an exact search for "growing lettuce" within growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine - i currently get 94 results for this search - they all have the words "growing lettuce" together

remove the quotes and i get 3930 results of posts that include those two words (and variations such as "grow", but the words are not necessarily together (ie, the words "lettuce" and "grow" can be in different places on the page)

there are loads more search options for google (and other search engines) - a valuable one is negating words and phrases by using the minus symbol - this can help narrow down results - so you might want to find information on growing lettuce which is not iceberg type - so your search could become:
              site:growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine "growing lettuce" -iceberg
this gives me 91 results - not the best example, but it shows how to do things

                Highlighting text

In the advanced tab we have the Bold,Italic & Underline buttons

You can do the same in quick reply by highlighting text (left click & drag) & then use any or all ...........

                control + b = =Bold
                control + i = = Italic
                control + u = =Underline

                      Permalinks

Are the number allocated to each post on the forums.
To use the permalink, simply right click (the #number in the top right corner of the relevant post),left click Copy Link Location & paste into your post to get an automatic redirect. You can even paste it into a PM & send the message to yourself as a memory aid

The Multi-Quote answer ^^ was in response to this question http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ml#post1011591

Why does Zaz say I should subscribe to the thread? Is it only accessible to those that subscribe? If it is how do I do it? Do I want to or need to?

Donna,I believe if you subscribe to any thread then you are notified of any new posts but this thread & the questions thread have been made "sticky" they will remain at/near the top of the chatback index page, this will ensure that they are easy for all to find

But what would I use a permalink for? From what you're saying, it's a number?!? Sorry I know you probably think this is a stupid question but this thread is already going over my head

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

A 'permalink' is a permanent link to a specific post, rather than a link to the whole thread. You find the permanent-link on each post where the post number is on the top right hand corner of each post. If you right click on the number, you should get an option to copy the link. Then if you paste that link somewhere else, it will take anyone who clicks it straight to that specific post
