  • Hi from Cornwall

    Hi All,
well we moved home to Cornwall a couple of years ago and have been busy trying to get on top of things around the house, as well as enjoying being home, the first couple of years is the hardest but now the bulk of the urgent stuff is done we are turning our thoughts to the garden with a long term view rather than just trying to keep it tidy.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an unused 10x12 foot greenhouse from the back of my dads shop that was unloved and unused for many years, with much broken glass. We took it down and transported it to our place, embarrassingly it then took me a year to think about putting it up, but its up, I have had to make lots of adjustments to it as i am a bit of a bodger and a perfectionist once i get a vision, these two traits dont go hand in hand well but it is what it is, the greenhouse is now bodged to perfection its level (now), sat on a brick base, has 500Ltrs of waterbutts fitted and working with 100 inside and 400 outside connected through the brick work so we dont have to go outside to get water, lazy as well

I didn't get it sorted until late but we have toms, cue's sweet peppers and lots of chilis on the go, all late in but they are thought of more as an experiment this year to see if we get enough light and how to best lay it out so we are ready for next year.

So i thought i had best join a forum for growing advice Etc as i am not that clued up on when i should be planing seeds Etc.

Anyway thats about it, other hobbies include motorbikes (hence the "Sprinter" handle), nothing to do with running, the grandkids, fishing (any kind of sea fishing) and mountain biking, wine making, too many things really but it keeps me busy

I have just noticed that you have a chicken section as well, which will be useful as we have 7 of them, 4 Blues and 3 Bantams.

The next project will be to build and then move them to a new long term purpose bodged run.

        When we have the money

Welcome, I am just up the road from you in Torquay. I think we are like minded because I am a keen angler, bodger and lazy to boot.

Hi Sprinter and welcome from the other side of the Bristol Channel.
We're like-minded (sorry about that) because I collect unwanted greenhouses (5), keep chooks (4) and like drinking wine
I'm more of a Botcher than a Bodger though

                    Pics i can do

                    Hi again,
if you want pics i can do that:

The first three pictures show a greenhouse that looks good but is bodged as the front is lower than the back, so all of the collected water flows off the front and not into the butt's.

The next one shows the water butts all connected so i have a reservoir outside linked to a usable 100 ltr butt inside

and the last one just shows some chili plants and things that we are experimenting.

It will get internal decking over winter and should be better next year after this years trials.

So how do you get the water into the butts?..............can you move them to the front?

The water is now flowing into the butt's, i could have moved everything to the from but that would have taken up valuable space that we want to use for a small veggie plot in the future, and as we have dead space at the back i had to get them working to the rear to maximize garden use.

To do that i removed all of the glass from the walls and jacked up the front until water leveled and poured to wards the drain at the rear, i then placed blocks under each of the struts and concreted in the gaps which will keep the bugs our and support the frame, then i put the glass back in.

Another bodge closer to perfection though i wish i had done that first of course

Hello and welcome from a one-time Plymouth resident, now sprinting (sedately) around the Pyrenees on my FZ6. We carried out the ultimate bodge and built a house .

Enjoy the Vine - it is a very special place.
