  • Hello from Sheffield

    Hi all.

In March I looked at our food outgoing bills, the overgrown garden and myself (country folk become city dweller from farming heritage) and decided I might as well put my money where my mouth is and also find a hobby to benefit my (oft ragged,) mental health state. Since then I've hacked my way through the back garden mess, begged, borrowed and recycled my way to a garden. So far I've only just broken the one hundred pound barrier I set myself and am hoping to do more as time goes on.

I've been lurking on the site and have bought the magazine since march and I would like to say a rather large thank you to all contributors. The advice and general levity of the chat has made this simpler and less stressful.

I thoroughly intend to reciprocate and help those also getting started and generally contribute to the forums. I do also hope to reveal some projects in the future, since I am an unashamed Geek (i.e. electronic monitoring of greenhouse.)

    Thanks for your time,

    Samuel

Hi Samuel and welcome. I'm glad you stopped lurking and are joining in - otherwise I wouldn't have seen those blue buckets you've used as pots - or been able to ask you where you got them I love the colour - even empty they brighten the place up!!

Welcome, I started partly to relieve the stress from work and as a hobby and one best things I have done. Hope you find the same.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

Bren in pots - Yeah, a bit of work, and am already harvesting some tasty goods.

Veggiechicken - The blue pots were donated by a friend who found them in his garage when he moved in. The previous tenants left them after they were moved out, because the landlord didn't like them growing *ahem* "herbs". I think they are buckets sold for the purpose of growing things in. I like em, they already have holes in and I agree that they do brighten up the garden. The Bees seem to like them too : )

Veggielot - Am finding it very helpful and keeps me even, I get to focus on a task and almost Zen. Agreed it is the best hobby I ever started.

Rustylady, Dorothy & Glutton - thanks!

Hello, Samuel. Looking at your slides, I'd say you were making good progress. I also find that the time I spend on our allotment helps re-balance me.

Hello Samuel, I'm the one from Rotherham lol. Welcome to the vine, gardening is my "me time" and therapy when I need it.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
