  • Hello from Isle of Sheppey!

hello all! I just got an allotment and as a newb I am feeling
overwhelmed with where to start! Obviously at the
beginning. I will post in the new shoots forum if I get
really stuck so just thought I'd say hi!

Trying to upload a photo! Might be easier on computer tomorrow as I am on my phone. Not sure what to grow! Have loads of seeds. Need to talk to neighbour a bit more as it was his plot previously. And a lot of weeding, digging first! I can get carried away so making great efforts to take one thing at a time! I will probably plant many things in small quantities, see what works and what doesn't, and plan better next year? I am not a planner. And container gardener until now so all change!

Hi, welcome. That plot doesn't look too bad at all!

First thing to do is to get rid of those weeds that are flowering before they set seed and give you a future problem. While you're doing that, think about what you like to eat and then what you want to grow.

If it includes potatoes, get some planted in the bit you've cleared while you tackle any more stubborn weeds and plan the rest.

              Enjoy!

Hi ndever - great name Welcome - and thanks for the photo. It worked!
Ask your neighbour what they've grown on the plot and where. Maybe there's something useful lurking in amongst the weeds. Doesn't look too bad actually.
Pull out all the big weeds and cover as much as you can with cardboard to stop any more weeds growing. Uncover it a section at a time and it won't see so daunting.

Thank you for the welcome and some really good tips! I'm going to take a fork tomorrow and go from there. I think I spotted parsnips in amongst the greenery so we will see upon digging! Going to take refuse bags until I find out more about on site etiquette 😃

Hello from an ex swampy - I had a plot on the Medway Rd site, years ago, before I moved away.

Which site are you on - looks like maybe Nursery Close? - nice site that is

                    Good luck with it.

Hi there, and a big welcome to the Vine from me too!

                        Nice plot!
....and a good time of year to get stuck in too.

I'd certainly be preparing a small area for your spuds and get them in as your very first job...that is, of course, after introducing yourself to your new neighbours!
