A friend is growing a hop plant in his garden. I am certain that he didn't do anything special in terms of soil preparation. But, be warned - the plant is rampant. After less than one year he has had to drag it back from growing over in to his neighbours garden and try and train it. He wanted to use home grown hops in his home made beer but having seen the size of the wretched thing and knowing that you only use a very small quantity of hops in a home-sized brew, I personally don't see the point. Just my opinion - gardening is a matter of personal choice.
