  • Hello everybody

Hello, I'm new to this forum, just joined and am looking for advice about raspberries - I planted an assortment of canes about 8 years ago, some summer fruiting, others autumn. No idea what variety. They seem to like it in my garden as they've tried to colonise the whole veg plot! However one thing they're not every good at is producing good quality fruit in large amounts. I would like to move the raspberries from their current position and relocate them in an area where they would be more easy to control and care for. Now, do I throw way the existing elderly, happy, healthy canes or re-locate the best of them and feed them wood ash and hope for the best? Any advice would be very welcome.

Hello, and welcome to the Madhouse!

As for the raspberries, I'm afraid I'm no help. Unless they want eating, of course!

Hello Ikeeptrying and welcome. I have a raspberry jungle too that I'm trying to tame. If you can remember which are the best canes, move those first and let them establish this year. Then decided whether you need to keep the rest or not.

          Hi, welcome to the vine.

You could always dig up a load of the suckers that come up in Spring and move them to where you want the new row to be? Then you could just trash the old ones next winter when the new ones have settled in.

          Just a thought.

Hello and welcome to the vine.

When you say overgrown, how overgrown do you mean? If it is a thorny jungle you are talking about, you could hack them back heavily to keep them under control. The lads on Beechgrove spoke about this last year IIRC, and said the plants will recover within a year.

It might be easier than trying to move them.

It's a jungle, so many Mosquitos I'm daren't pick I case I get malaria! They've got to be moved or trashed as I want to put in a couple of apple trees.

Think I might do that, have to move or trash them as I want to put in a couple of apple trees. They have taken over a huge area of my former veg patch.
