    Hello from Durham

    Hi all

    Now that my wife and I have retired we have some time on our hands

    So, we have decided to get a greenhouse so that, in theory, we can save money on flower plants for the garden and hanging baskets, and also grow some toms and cukes. At this point theory and practice deviate rapidly

    I have ordered a greenhouse, an 8' x 6' Simplicity Classic, from the Greenhouse people, but have delayed delivery until I prepare the base. My garden has a 1 in 10 slope so I have decided on 600mm sq paving slabs surrounded by sleepers as retaining walls, the greenhouse base will be fastened to the sleepers.

    I hope to take some pictures as it progresses, if anyone is interested.

    I have a sloping garden too but I don't think I can match your 1:10 slope Good luck with the foundations - and yes please - I'd like to see some piccies

      Thanks VC maybe I gave the wrong impression as to the slope - for every 10 foot of garden it drops 1 foot.

      I also have a garden railway - at the bottom of the garden I have 3 sleepers laid edge on edge to bring it up to level and the railway will be a bit of a feature as the build progresses.

        Oh - that 1:10!! I'm the confused one, not you George
        I've just had a GH put up on a similar slope - mine slopes from side to side and front to back
        Like the thought of your railway Will the GH be the control centre in the middle of the track?

          You got it, VC, the entrance will be a step with a tunnel for the trains to run through. I've wanted a tunnel for ages, but this one will be an expensive one

          Edit - cor, that looks like a canny greenhouse VC

            Wow - a tunnel through a step!! Impressive. When I was a kid, my Dad had a model railway that ran around the downstairs rooms of our little terraced house - in a sort of figure of eight , around the front room then into the back room. It was supposed to be for my brother but we all knew it was my Dad's toy really Once the track was laid out nobody could move anywhere for fear of stepping on a station or a tree or some bit of scenery
            He would have loved an outdoor railway. I hope you get lots of pleasure from it

                  Welcome george and Mrs george - yes please, lots of pics. I like the idea of a see-through 'shed' where you can sit in warmth and dry comfort and still watch the train run whatever the season

                        My brother swapped me his train set for the hot water bottle on a freezing night in 1963. He revoked on the deal the next day.

                          Thanks for the welcome, all!

                          I have a delivery of sleepers, paving flags, sand and dolomite on Tuesday, going to make a start tomorrow preparing the site ready for constructing the platform (for the greenhouse, not the railway ). Mrs George (Margaret, actually) has been instructed in the use and abuse of the camera, so look out for some pics tomorrow night

                            I'm another who fancies a train layout up I've made a few OO buildings but that's as far as I got before another hobby beckoned.
