    Hello from co durham

    Hi everyone, I'm cecily, a new allotment owner. I took on a very overgrown allotment, as I have only got a small front garden that's north facing and not suitable for veggies. I have grown things like salad and potatoes in bags on a patio before, but I have never taken something so big on.

    I have cleared all of it of the 7ft vegetation, and have dug over two beds to plant in so far. Two thirds will just be garden/play area for the children, but that needs going through with a fine tooth comb to get rid of all the glass and metal that are lurking!

    I will be looking for growing tips, as I have only grown simple easy things before!

        Hello Cecily & welcome to the jungle. Check out your rules as I would think a larger proportion may have to be used for cultivation.

            They aren't bothered as long as it is tidy. The allotments are so big that most of them have a large proportion covered with plastic to stop the weeds, but have been like that for years. The only rules are to seek permission before putting up sheds, no livestock are allowed, and it has to be tidy. Thanks for the tip though

                      If you're leaving a large part of the plot as play area, make sure that the weeds don't come back there as they may spread back into your cleared beds.
