  • Greetings

    Good evening all.

Ok, first post, so introduction time.

I'm in the 3rd or 4th year of growing things to eat in my garden, but I'm in constant need of assistance.

This is what I'm working with:

Which is an awful lot better than it was a few years ago. The shed was new last year, and bit by bit I'm digging up the lawn.

This bit should look better soon, if the fencer arrives tomorrow as promised:

I've got a dozen ex-council recycling bins to grow stuff on the patio. Please ignore the old fish tank and other rubbish. I will clear it soon. Honest.

So far this year I've sown / planted:

Beetroot (White, Pronto, Globe 2, Wodan F1)
    Red Beard spring onions
    Turnip (Arcoat, Golden Ball)
    Swede (Invitation)
Radishes (B&Q Value range - allsorts!)
1st Early & Maincrop potatoes (Duke of York & Picasso)
Carrots (Nantes, Autumn King, Jaune Obtuse de Doubs [yellow])
Parsnips (Tender & True, Lancer, White Gem)
Cauliflower (Verde Marchigiano, All Year Round, Ottobrino Romanesco, Sicilia Violetto)
    Leeks (Musselburgh)
Tomatoes (Orange Banana, Amish Paste, Kumato, Millefleur, Gardener's Delight, Red Cluster Pear, Galina, Purple Ukraine)
Chillies (Lemon Drop, Wenk's Yellow Hot, Pretty in Purple, Iranian Round, Purple Venezuelan [not yet germinated])
    West Indian curcubit
    Ruby Red sunflowers

I've got 2 lots of runner beans that I might sow this weekend. I need to learn what to do with celery.

I've also got the odd venus fly trap knocking about, most barely alive after shamefully neglecting them over winter.

I still consider myself to be very much a rookie. The old fella's the real gardener in the family.

So there you go. Look forward to leaching the experience from your brains.

    Hello and welcome

Bit early for runners - even in the greenhouse.

edit: no, I take that back. Your last frost is early May, so sow your runners in pots any time now (I did mine this week too)

Ahh...err...I see my reputation precedes me.

I might also add that each year I have a little competition with a mate of mine, and any other friends that choose to join in. This year there are four of us who will be attempting to grow the longest runner bean.

I have a friend request! I don't know if I have replied to it correctly or not - I hope I have returned the request - let me know if I haven't.

I've got to rack up 50 posts before I can swap seed.

Oh well, this is one more.

                        And this is another.

Which bit of the board do you recommend for advice on companion planting? I think I need some hyssop, lovage & borage. Oh, and comfrey to make tea.

Welcome aboard MBE. Try using the search option (towards the top of the page) and just type in companion planting. You'll find loads of treads and posts on the subject.

Love your garden. It's so neat, tidy and organised. I'd be ashamed to post pics of mine at the moment. I call it organised chaos!!

                          Good luck with the growing.
A good beginning is half the work.
