  • Beginner from Brighton

Hello - I've been a lurker for quite a few months, and have learned a great deal from this forum, so I thought it was time I did things properly and introduced myself.

I took on a half plot in Brighton almost exactly a year ago, following three years on the waiting list. I'd barely grown anything in my life, and was quite prepared to lose interest pretty rapidly. Well, the reverse happened, and I can now safely say I'm obsessed with my little oasis. Last summer, I only managed to dig out three beds, but still got an amazing harvest of potatoes, onions, butternut squash, courgettes and enough tomatoes to keep us in sauce for months.

I've now managed to clear about three quarters of the plot, and need to get cracking on the last overgrown section pretty sharpish, if I'm going to have enough space to plant everything I've started off so far.

My main problem is with slugs and bindweed, but I doubt I'm alone in that.

Thank you for all the advice you've unknowingly given me so far! Here's a pic to give an idea of what my plot was like before I started. I must take some more soon, if only to remind myself of the progress I've made.

Where's your plot Seagull? I know Brighton well, I'd still live there if we could afford to. We turned our flats into a vertical allotment over on Montpelier Rd, just down from Waitrose

It's at Lower Roedale (something of a misnomer, as there's nothing 'lower' about this windswept hillside!), which is in Hollingdean. It's a great site, and everyone I've met is really friendly and helpful.

I love Brighton, too. I've lived here most of my life and can't imagine being anywhere else.

I worked in Lewes for years - nice town! And I haven't been into the rock garden for years, but I regularly look at it from the other side of the road when I'm walking my dog around Preston Park.
