    Accepted A Plot

    Hi Everybody, Im on cloud nine at the moment. Ive been waiting for an allotment for 15 months, and today i went to view one and i have accepted it so in a few weeks i will be in there getting my hands dirty.

          Chickens as well Will you have some?
          What sort of weeds are they - is it just grass? Doesn't look too bad at all
          Second thoughts - I can see bindweed, ?nettles, ?sowthistle and maybe dock at the back.

            Yeah, i will be getting 6 chickens
            Yeh the weeds are a pain but the ones i pulled up, came up pretty easily, im told the soil has been cultivated earlier this year. The guy from the council said that he can get somebody to trim it all for me before i move onto it. Its all happening now for me. Im just waiting for the papaerwork and a key to be sent.

              Well done.

              I personally wouldn't get anyone to do anything, they might well spray it. Best thing is pull out all you can, then cardboard it as you go and play through the card in the first year.

                Thanks zazen999, thats good advice thanks. I'll ask him to leave it alone, thanks.
                Im thinking of using the wood from the pallets as borders and the tyres to hold some bee friendly plants.

                I just wish i had it now and didnt have to wait for the documents to be sent and the key to come. Might see if i can pop down to the office to sort it face to face.

                  Yep, I'd just mow, strim the lot and lay cardboard or thick newspaper on it and then plant thru it the first year. Then you've got plenty of time to plan what you want to go where and where the sun shines most and all that stuff.

                  Throw some quick growing plants in for now, and then put some in for overwintering while you're sussing out the other million things you want to do. And have fun with the chooks.

                          Yeah i will drop in and say hello. i got the keys on friday and i was told i can start to use the plot immediatly. the dimensions of the plot are 30ft wide and 100ft long. I spoke to a fellow allotment owner and he said that the allotment site was originally a tip and that the soil isnt the best. i will post some more pictures on here once ive got some of the de-weeding done.

                            Little Update

                            Hi all, just a little update of what ive done. So far ive spent about 4 hours on the plot.

                            Pulling up the weeds is hard work and my hamstrings are killing me lol

                            Ive found old bottles and jars and a 2 prong folk, plus lots of pallets and blue sheeting. The place is a jungle, going to take me a while me thinks

                              Welcome to the site! I am so happy for you that you have such an awesomely large plot and can tell how excited you are from your posts ... it is infectious thank you.

                              The only advice other than putting in short stay crops or whatever for this year, is to put early potatoes in the worst of the ground to break it up a bit for sowing other stuff later on. Maybe container some trials this year of things too could work so you get some ideas of where things could flourish best - this has the added benefit of being easy to fleece / bring indoors to a shed or gh later on too, so you could get an extended stay from them.

                              Wish I could send up some of my extras for you but I feel sure you will excel at this plot.

                              Have you checked out the inspirational thread on square foot gardening? It also may give you a good idea of how to maximise your plot or even just sort which things work best where.

                              Best of luck to you. These good people are going to be way better at this than me but wanted to send some ideas your way by way of return for your progress photo's etc. Thank you
