Default Help for Newbie

I am about to start in my new venture of growing salads and veg in pots n containers.

What is the best compost to use? I have been told John Innes #2 to get started in seed trays and then a 50% mix of this and a cheaper compost in a bigger pot when they bigger.

I know i am starting off late but want to go a bit slow to get the feel and understand what im doing

Any good sound advice and help would be great

Thanks Misty

Hi mistyblu, welcome to the vine,
This year I have tried the 'cut and come again' salad leaf mixes....great results
I use a full seed tray half filled with compost, sprinkle in the seeds, a fine covering of peat and away they go. I get another tray going two weeks later.

Good luck with your veg in containers, sorry i have little knowledge of this as I grow on my plot.

Try asking the question else where on the forum.

hi Misty

welcome from a fellow clevelander ! I'm relatively new here too, and have just planted a load of stuff in pots as well as the ground. I just use a multi-purpose compost and it seems okay. (Peter Barratts own). I am sure the other grapes will have plenty of good advice for you.

My veg/salad stuff I have put straight into plastic pots (got from pound shop for 99p) ie spring onions, carrots, herbs, got some radishes in a grow bag and some mixed lettuce leaves in a seed tray.

I just have a go and see what comes up, its great fun !
