  • Supermarket lemongrass

I've just bought a pack of 2 stem lemongrass from Sainsbury (reduced to 20p from 69p ). From what I last learnt from a lemongrass thread, you just need to put the stems in a jar of water, changing water now and then. But the root bits at the bottom have been neatly chopped off so I'm thinking these are no good.

What do you think, will they still root and is it the wrong time to be doing this? Thanks.

veg you should keep the stems in water in a warmer place than the kitchen windowsill. They will eventually start to root, and can be planted up.

Despite the stems having been 'chopped off' they should still root in the jar of water.

Apparently you can do this and it works really well - unfortunatley I didn't realise this until after I'd sownn some seeds last year which were very small and fiddly until they got going. If I was growing some again I'd defo go with this method. Am growing mine on in a pot which is currently in the conservatory to keep it frost free over winter.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks for the reassurance, I've placed them in the pantry where it is warm with the boiler in there.

Yeah I heard they have to be brought indoors during the chilly season, otherwise what a fantastic and 'doable' herb. Wish ginger or galangal was that straightforward then we'd have all the right fresh ingredients for Thai cooking.

I put some I got from the supermarket into a jar of water and they are sprouting roots like there's no tomorrow! How are yours doing?

Poorly, only one teeny-weeny bits of what I hope is a root forming from one stalk out of two. The tips are starting to dry off, going brown. When was yours put in water, mine in first week of January. Where do you put your lemongrass?

Thanks, mine's in boiler/pantry room, probably too dark in there so I'll put them on the kitchen window sill and outside during the day. You're ahead of me by a month at least so I hope mine will pick up .

                        growing ginger

Two things. I've got four stems in small coke bottles on my window and they are doing nicely. I'm going to pot them up soon, but I was hoking in here to see what sort of soil is best. I noticed your comment about growing ginger.

When I was making homemade ginger beer, I bought a lot of ginger root. I left the remainder in the cupboard, in a bag. I noticed that it had started to sprout in its own. The lump of ginfer was large, however I wasn't sure if it was sprouting shoots or growing more root.

Looking at it again, it has to be shoots. I'm going to pot it up and keep the soil just a little damp and see what happens. I'm expecting the tuber to grow, so I should have my own source of ginger. Like any tuber I expect I'll be able to slit it and great more and more.

I'll check in again and let you know
                        Regards
                        Barney

I've managed to get a few lemongrass stalks to root and now there are really tall think green leaves coming out of it too. Are the green leaves edible? I don't smell much from them. However, the lemongrass stalks it self have browned and seem to have dried out. Wondering if I should keep or toss it or if it can be recuperated.

I would leave it - mine looked a bit like that but I notice they now have a new green stick coming up next to the old brown sticks. i read that it is quite prolific when it gets going, so give it a bit of time and see what happens.
