  • New to Herbs - help needed

    Hi

I want to have a small herb bed at my allotment in a raised bed

Which herbs can I grow from seed and get a crop this year and which herbs are best bought as plants?

Parsley coriander dill from seed and will give a crop this year. Sage and thyme are better bought as plants.

      Thanks

I think ive narrowed it down to thyme, coriander, sage, oregano, basil and mint to use on the bbq

Ive inherited a rosemary bush so thats ok

Because I want to use them this year Im just not sure which to buy or sow.

You can grow basil from seed but it needs heat to get it started. Mint as a plant but it is very invasive and is better in a large pot. Chives also can be grown from seed but if you want to use them this year buy a clump. Oregano is also better bought as a plant.

Cheapest way I've found is to go to a supermarket and buy their herbs in pots in the culinary section. I got a pot of chives from Lidl for 49p and planted them in the garden and they come back in abundance yearly! Brilliant plant, the flowers are delicious too if I can bear to nick a few off the bees!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!
