  • Herb garden

I started a herb garden last year. The only spot I could site it is in the corner of a north facing bed. It gets some sun but not loads. As I suspected not very successfully. I am planing on having some fan trained fruit trees in large wooden planters against the sunny South facing wall of the house. Could I under plant the trees with my herbs or would I be demanding too much of limited soil

What herbs are you thinking of, Bal?
    Annual or perennials?

A bit of both really. Have some sage oregano tarragon basil and Rosemary that I bought over from the old house. Have added chinese chives various thymes. Mint in pots (with extra weed membrane) want to add parsley and coriander as well as sweet basil bergamot etc

Not knowing the size of the planters, I'm just guessing..............I'd underplant with thymes, chives, annual herbs like basil, maybe a prostrate rosemary, but not tall herbs like sage, tarragon, rosemary.
Could you have a separate planter as a herb garden?

Actually hadn't thought of that. It could go under the windows. Thanks for that VC

The woody herbs should do OK with few nutrients, but you'll probably need to prune them to stop them taking over and crowding out everything else. Rosemary and mint are two herbs I'd give their own pots.

I might just plant the rosemary in the flower borders. It's a pretty plant and evergreen so would look ok there
