  • Coriander gone to seed?

    Hi All

    Newbie here.

I have grown a few coriander plants from seed and they have the usual coriander leaves at the bottom but at the top they have a total different leaf and they have started to flower.
Last night I nipped the flowers off but am I too late to get more growth of the leaves I want?
Should I take all the top off and leave just the bottom or is it now past doing anything?

    Thanks

Sow more and keep sowing every 2 weeks . . . they "bolt" readily and you need to sow regularly to have a steady supply of leaves or try and find seed of a variety that is less prone to bolting.

are these plants that i have no use now, once they flower do they then die?

is it now warm enough to sow straight outside? I have like a covered area in my garden which gets really warm and its very sheltered.

I'd be tempted to leave a plant to seed so you have free seeds for next year...the rest I'd chop back as they will probably push up a few new leaves.
Then...freeze any decent leaves you can save.
As Raptor suggests successive sowing is the best way to go.

I'm going to buy some of these and give them a go, they are supposed to be very resistant to bolting . . .

Mine too! I am going to try some out in the shade tunnel, which has effectively stopped my spinach from bolting.

could the heat have done it? they are under like a lean to at the moment with a plastic corrugated roof so as you can imagine it gets very warm

1st update, I planted 10 seeds in individual cells on the 24th June, my typical germination times with Coriander have been 2 weeks. Will let you know when they show themselves.

Quick question - how do you get the seeds from your coriander plant?

No idea . . . but I assume you wait till they are ripe and then pick them off . . . mine have a way to go . . .

You can let them dry on the heads then shake them into paper bags? The seeds are quite small......
