  • Brown spots on mint

    Hi Guys

I got a mint pot from the supermarket just at the start of summer. I placed it in a bigger container and put it outside.

It started growing well and it started to overrun my rosemary plant in the container. I cut it down it seemed to carry on growing well. However it started getting brown spots recently. I read that this was due to overwatering and because we had some down pours I put it down to this.

I moved it to a more sheltered area and it hasnt recovered at all and it appears to be getting worse.

Any advice? Is it due to over watering or because I did too much cutting back? Whats the best way of cutting back?

I have mint growing in a pot outside and I don't do anything with it. Sometimes it looks like it is on it's last legs with some spots on the leaves and a couple of days later it looks healthy again. Mint is one of those plants that will take whatever is thrown at it. I had it growing in soil once and in the winter you think that it won't do anything but come the spring it is up and about more than the previous year.

Mint does get rust and that causes brown marks on the leaves.

Here is what the RHS has to say about it:

Brown spots on mint...Have you considered a passing incontinent cow?

My mint dissapears in the winter then bursts forth in spring, it can easily take over your garden so I always grow it in a pot. The new growth then will probably be spot free. i always freeze enough to last through winter, so much better than the stuff in jars.
