Default Mint again

I planted some mint last year and it grew well but after a month or two it began to get black patches on the leaves and is now a sorry twiggy sight! I've now noticed white spots on the stems and was wandering if this is a virus and if so was if caused by me stripping bits off for the pots?
Would it be ok to take a cuuting or shall I start again?
