I know they can be grown outside but do I have to wait until better weather? I have some baby chives which are about 3 inches high and if I can make space on my window sill for something else then I will.

Give them a few days of being outside in the day and back on their sill at night. After a week or 10 days of this they will be as tough as old boot leather and you can happily plant them out.

As Flummery and Roitelet have said, they are very hardy once they are hardened off and outside. Just remember that those lovely pink flowers turn to seeds and if you're not careful, you'll have chive plants all over your garden next year

Agree with all that's been said but thought that I'd mention that the slugs in my garden developed a very keen taste for chives last year and totally decimated one patch, very strange as they've never bothered them before.
