Grow Your Own Magazine

This thread will be used for peoples reccomended "Gold Standard Varieties".

If you can reccomend a fruit or vegetable variety that has exceptional taste, quality and a good yield then please list them here along with your reasons why they should be included.

Taste is more important than yield but both qualities must shine through. This is going to be a very flexible list so please post A NEW THREAD with your suggestion

One of the moderators will then take your suggestions and add them to this thread. you will not be able to see your posts until they are moderated.

Contributors will be acknowledged next to their nominated varieties.

The list will be a "work in progress" and will build up in time to be a worthwhile reference for choosing which varieties to grow.

Potato 1st / 2nd earlies
Foremost
An excellent tasting waxy potato with good sized tubers and a reasonable resistance to slug damage.
Roseval
Red salad potato, huge quantities of fairly uniform size spuds, little slug damage and superb taste, boiled and cold in salads and such. (recommended by Muckdiva)

Potato Maincrop
Marfona
A very versatile waxy potato that makes an excellent baker if left in the ground long enough. It is moderately resistant to slug damage and has a superb taste. It stores very well.

Great in pots in greenhouse when slow to grow in garden - reliable and great taste (recommended by Kay)

Parsnip 'Tender and True' - my second year of growing this and it hasn't disappointed yet again, beautiful creamy coloured roots that scrub up really nicely and stay tender right to the middle even when quite large. Delicious flavour. recommended by Birdie Wife

De nice a fruit rond
A very prolific round variety with a pale green skin. It has an excellent taste and is useable even when a bit large.

Peas
Pea 'Misty' performed fabulously for me this year, very productive, with plump pods that set mainly outside the foliage for easy picking. The plants were very vigourous and easily caught up with the ones I sowed in the late autumn last year Birdie Wife
