Best you come here and try it. We have not had any proper rain or rainy season for nearly 3 years. I am now going to revamp my veggie garden ready for next year's heat blasts. I will be covering my whole veggie garden in fine netted tunnels to protect my crops from the heat. At present I have my leafy veg ( sprouts, kale, cabbages etc. , ) under smaller versions of the tunnels I plan to make - they are coping better than the uncovered veg. I have 4 beds, 2 at 4 X 4 m and 2 at 4 X 5m. I will be using metal stakes banged into the ground over which I will put alcathene water pipes to make a hoop. I will then cover with the fine grade netting to make the tunnels. This will also help to keep the soil moist.

It sounds lovely where you are,we're having a cold sunless week here,the rain everyday is nice for the plants - better than our chlorinated tap water. It's nice when the sun makes an appearance,I'd put down some grass/straw over all my beds to retain this moisture if I thought we were going to have a heatwave,so I won't need to do that.
