Default Please stop with the book recommendations ...

... you are costing me a fortune!

In the style of Alcoholics Anonymous
"My name is T-lady and I'm addicted to books"

You folk are just fueling my frenzy. I've just had to order "Diggers Diary" AND "One Man and His Dig" having read your reviews. Please no more ... think of the children, you're tearing this family apart.

PS: I drink too much as well and don't have kids

Could you not order the titles you might like to read from your local library? Durham County Council charge 30p per reservation (catalogue on the internet from all branches in the county) so it's much cheaper than buying each book I would like to read.

BTW I thoroughly enjoyed reading Digger's Diary!

You see jaykay, although this is eminently sensible it just doesn't help me with my addiction. It's not just reading the books but also HAVING the books. They sit there looking gorgeous on my bookcase(s) and can be dipped into time and time again. Ridiculously, when I'm planting something new, I might refer to 5 or 6 books to look at planting spaces (and then I go with the smallest distances mentioned). I'm a reference junky and if you read a good story once, it's worth reading again and again and again.

I've never understood people who say they can't re-read a book. Do they buy CDs and only listen to them once?

Here you go.....

The Book People: Top quality, hand-picked books at a fraction of high street prices

Cancer research have loads of 2nd hand books at £1.50 each and rotate their stock regularly!!
If you go to the ones in more affluent areas, you'd be surprised at the stuff which has been passed on!

Hmm...I'm an avid reader too...but don't tell anyone!!

nicos, why have you done this to me? Am I not in enough trouble as it is? The Book People website is now open in a second window and calling to me loudly ...

Oh no, and a copy of the '100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden' book has just been delivered to my desk (I'm a tomato addict). A quick look through tells me I'm only growing two out of their selection. You know what this means ... 98 varieties to track down for next year!

Do you think I'm a collecta-holic?

The link was the green-lettered underlined word - see 'Melons' below and click.

Don't forget you can use the FREE173 code for free delivery under £25, so you can be sensible!

I'm after a copy of this book too!

Have just bought this book on Melons - too optimistic for the UK?

T-lady, you know you can't fight it! Just give in.

Anyway, it makes me feel much better knowing others are similarly afflicted!

I'm exactly the same. Every new type or variety of vegetable has to be ruthlessly looked up online and in every book I have.

Only a few Chapters in so far.......

If anybody has read View From a Shed by Michael Wale, they will not be surprised with similarities with this book.

Its the same site, around the same time period (London Bombings) and several people are mentioned in both books.

But it is so far a good read, slightly different to some 'Newbie takes on allotment' books as this guy's wife is a newbie alongside him. (and they are fans of Sarah Raven).

The melon book looks wonderful but I think you could just be pushing the boundaries of feasible crops a tad

The 100 Heirloom Toms book is lurvely. 100 varieties, each with a full page photo and a separate page of write up. Not sure how accessible some of the varieties will be as it keeps saying 'not commercially available' - I think you have to be in the American seed swap group to get hold of them.

I'll be trying one melon variety this year in the g/h - charentais canteloupe.

Did you get the 100 tomatoes book cheap somewhere?

Hey Manda

I'm trying a couple of melon types this year: Medley Mixed and Noir des Carmes. the Medley mix has been really disappointing as only one seed came through. Are you going to grow yours outside or in a greenhouse?

The 100 Toms book came from a bookseller on Amazon - The Book Depository - it cost just under £9 including P&P - not cheap but when you're an addict you've just got to do it!

Have a heart - leave the poor woman alone. I know just how she feels - Mind you I have really been enjoying dipping into several books, following the delivery of my order from the book people, following the very naughty thread drawing my attention to it
