| Hi all Tis my birthday coming up and I have been asked to suggest idea for pressys. I have been meaning to get my hands on a good veg/herb growing book/guide for awhile so I figured it would be a good idea to suggest that as a pressy idea. Does anyone have any they would recommend? I don’t have a lot of growing experience so I need something aimed at beginners but I also need something quite comprehensive too. At this present moment I am just growing things on a very small scale basis in my back garden (mostly in tubs etc) and I have been having reasonable success so far. Currently I am looking for an allotment so obviously im going to need guidance in that respect too. I am also interested in been active in the garden all year round! Eek, that all sounds very demanding? Any ideas? |

| Peebels Firstly, welcome aboard. In terms of books, you'll find we all have our favourites and require different things from the books we use. I myself am also fairly new to this (been doing it for just over a year) and when I first started I rushed out and bought several books, and asked for other books like yourself, for presents. My most used book however is this one: Amazon.co.uk: Vegetable and Herb Expert: D.G. Hessayon: Books It's straightforward and easy to use as a reference guide with nice simple instructions and illustrations. I also have Carol Klein's Grow Your Own Veg, which has some useful and inspiring information, much the same as The Allotment Book by Andi Clevely. I have found that they show the "ideal" in these books, sometimes just not achieveable on your plot, but it's good for inspiration and guidance. Over and above any book though, I have found this place the biggest source if guidance, support and inspiration. So stick around. Good luck.

| Here's three older threads where similar recommendations have been asked for... grow veg book what book Recommended Garden Bibles!! I'm a Joy Larkcom 'Grow Your Own Vegetables' fan myself, but if you want pictures you'll need another. Not got the Carole Klein one but lots have been sold. Also the new 'Kitchen Garden' one by Mr Titchmarsh is liked by some. ![]()
