Default Kettle

Hi all!

I know this sounds bizarre but does anyone know of a type of kettle that runs on a battery? Or recommend a tiny type of paraffin stove? I have heard of flasks () but I find the water doesn't stay hot all day, or runs out. Actual fire-lighting on our plots is frowned upon slightly as there are designated areas to burn non-compostable waste so I can't really boil water over a big open fire.

Any help / suggestions much appreciated.

Cheers and all best

Kelly kettles are great too, very efficient, but might be a bit bulky for what you want.

Default Kettle

Sorry, pure muppetry.

I never thought about a little camping stove! I thought the Kelly Kettles looked interesting - I had a look at their website. I can't look at the Argos site until later as my employer bans most 'shopping' sites. Ah well.

Thanks for the info both.

Best

Just happened to have Argos book handy - stove mentioned is £18.99, gas cylinders £8.99 for 4. Looks really sturdy.

can highly recomend this, but we got ours from a camping shop about a fiver cheaper that argos and the cannisters were a much better buy from there, make sure you get a whistling kettle so you dont forget about it and burn your shed down!!!!

Oooh! Thanks so much for that Flutterby. I might be able to get one over the weekend - see if I can afford it! I'll have the old guys on my site coming round for a cup of tea yet!

Thanks again.

Default Kettle

Hi!

Thanks for that tip Hans Mum! I can just see me doing that - getting stuck in to my digging forgetting all about the boiling kettle

Will have a look on ebay later and also thought I might try my local freecycle site too.

Cheers all.

Blessed be

Try your local camping shop, or Aldi, Liddle, QD etc. Tesco did little tiny one ring camping gas thingys last year - just make sure you can get the replacement cartridges.

Halfords also do camping gear, quite reasonably priced too!

We have camping stoves as we do usually go camping for our hols, but usually just take a big stainless steel flask down to the plot, if you prewarm it before filling, and keep it somewhere not too cold it will keep drinks hot enough for about 6 hours!

Can anyone think of an eco-friendlier way? I'm not really happy with gas canisters for landfill reasons...and can't make a camp-fire!

Hi, there is a kettle thing in a catalogue called Hawkins Bazaar. It has a little space in the bottom that you can put burning stuff in. It's meant to heat up water fast and apparently is an old idea that has been revived. Don't know if it's the same as a kelly kettle (never heard of 'em). but might be worth a gander.

Hi

The kettle in Hawkins looks a lot like the Kelly Kettle. I might have a look in the army shop down the road - see what they've got.

What you want is a 'Trangia'.

These are a type of camping stove made by a Swedish company called Trangia AB. They burn meths and have been around for years......but they're still popular as they are so small and light and fabulous quality.

I've had one for years and they work perfectly. They do a little mini one for about £20 and go up from there.

These little devices are a pleasure to use, very safe, and about as ecologically sound as you can get burning something. There are no waste cannisters etc.

Only problem with the Trangia is that you get funny looks every time you go to buy meths - when I bought some in Scotland I had to sign a bit of paper to say that I wasn't going to drink it!!!!!

Oh my goodness - can't believe they actually got you to sign a piece of paper to say you wouldn't drink it! Surely it's completely up to you? Anyhoo - thanks for that suggestion TA. I like the idea of having no waste canisters. I'll have a look on the good old WWW for some info.

Ta very much.

what about the small refillable camping gas bottles? we dont have a kitchen yet and are using our caming stoves all the time, we have a little refillable gas bottle about the same size as the thro away canisters, and a single ring, quite economical too.
