  • how to clean melted nylon off your new ceramic soleplate iron

Oh, I just knew a third thing was going to go wrong ! (broke bike one, broke bike two, broke iron three).

*somebody* ironed some black nylon shorts on the cotton setting and got melted plastic all over the white ceramic soleplate.

I phoned Tefal for advice, they said try some warm water & a non-stick scouring pad, or send them the iron & £12 and they'd have a look at it.

Then I went to my old friend Google, and somebody mentioned baking powder.

I didn't have any, so tried bicarbonate of soda, warm water & the non-stick scouring pad. 10 mins = nothing doing.

Then I switched the iron to the lowest setting (nylon, actually) and kept scrubbing: the melted black nylon started to come straight off, like magic. Brilliant.

Just be careful not to melt the scouring sponge too: you need to be quick with the scrubbing.

When I've melted stuff in the past (once, or maybe twice), I've kept the iron on, and just rubbed it against the edge of the ironing board. I think someone taught me that when I worked at a well known Swedish appliance manufacturer.

D'ya know I only recently found at that the word 'Nylon' is derived from the two places it was invented - New York and London. Mad.

You can use salt as well as baking powder / bicarb. I keep my out of date tubs of both of these as a replacement for cream cleaner for everywhere.

Isn't there some trick with ironing a sheet of brown paper?
Not sure if that's for something specific, but it sprang to mind.

Ollie - the brown paper is for mending your head - nothing to do with your kidneys, so I'd save yourself the bother. Use the vinegar on your chips.

As to why you're ironing the brown paper - well, the mind boggles.

Not sure about the ceramic part TS - but I would imagine a ceramic one is even tougher than the old coated non-stick irons -which is what I use.
The advice forums are full of remedies - rubbing soap across a cooling iron, using salt on its own and with vinegar, using a green scourer, using WD40, using a plastic spatula, using sticky stuff remover - and so on. Salt is roughly equivalent to the sodas in terms of abrasiveness. (Sugar would be the same but it would easily go sticky if any trace was left.)

Yes, I did look, but couldn't see much advice for the ceramic plates (except for lots that say THIS DID NOT WORK!) lol
