  • Compost Dalek recommendations

So I've motivated myself into buying a compost dalek - we havent sorted out the garden enough yet to have a proper compost bin / heap, but I've decided a temporary(ish) dalek is better than nothing. I don't want to spend a fortune, but don't want total rubbish either.

Looking on @mazon (the source of all things shopping related) the blackwalls look ok - but do I need to also buy a base?

Its a whole new world - I'd appreciate any advice

Do your local council sell them cheap? They're about £6/7 here.

No need for base. They say to put it on slab to keep vermin out but all that happens is that they will eventually gnaw their way in so it's pointless.

If the link doesn't work, I put my mothers postcode in Vicki & they come in @ £17.98, buy 1 get 1 @ half price.

Try looking of Freecycle or eB@y, I picked up a Rotol Compost bin for 99p because no one else had bid on it.

I've never found a need for a base, you're trying to encourage worms and other types of things in to the compost to help it break down.

If you're worried about vermin, have you considered Bokashi compost? I put all the things that would encourage rats and the like (potato peelings, fish, cooked meat, etc.) into a bokashi system and then put the results into a dalek to mix with the compost & soil. I've never had any problems with vermin since I've been doing that even though we used to get rats into the compost to eat the potato peelings before that.

I'd not bother with a base either. You want stuff to happen in there, easier for the workers to get in and do their thaing with not base
