Default Allotted Time

Just thought I would recommend this - it arrived in the post this morning at about 11am - I'm now on page 278!!!!!!!!!!!! The kids will eventually get bored of telling me I've not cooked any tea I'm sure. And the dust will still be there tomorrow.

Its a really enjoyable book - the tag line is "Two Blokes, One Shed, No Idea".

I thought it was only me that talked to my seedlings before I went to bed, but since reading this I'm reassured that there are others like me in this world.

Enjoy
Clare

Default A good read.

I had written a lovely long reply to your post, but then my sodding PC crashed When i pressed submit.

So here is the short version...

I can highly recommend View from a shed: Four seasons as an urban Farmer, by Micheal Wale.

Also Diggers Diary by victor Osbourne.

And a new book I know nothing about, but looks interesting called My Life on a hillside allotment by Terry Walton, which is due out on 2nd April. 2007

Hi
I've read this, and would highly recommend it, a lot about allotment gardening in the past when you bought seed by weight from the ironmongers... and there's not much on allotment history so found this partic valuable. Good family story too from a dedicated allotment man.
best wishes
Sue

Got this as part of my MOM pack and loved it. Had to put it down from time to time to sleep and go to work. Quite touching in places and lots of humour. Very identifiable with for those of us with lotties.

I have just found this book in a charity shop for £1.00.

So far page 199 I haven't been able to put it down (except to type this). It is very good, very funny definately a laugh out loud book. I highly recommend it.

Am I the only one who DIDN'T like Allotted Time? (I found the style annoying, too many bloodys, too much repetition) But, i did love Digger's Diary.

Beefy
You are correct - he is the same Terry that rings into JV's lunchtime show on Radio Two.
Chris Evans is now officially an allotment holder as well - he seems very keen and is always banginhg on about what he's ben up to - maybe Radio Two should be adopted as the official GYO station ?

Default recommendation

I have finished reading Life on a hillside allotment .. He is the Chap from Radio 2. Interestingly I knew him from the Big Dig, which is now repeated at various time on UKtvGardens.

It about 90% about him and his life and 10% about what he do'es on his allotment, if you where a fan of the big dig as i am, then you may find this book very interesting as it has more depth about the other people who allotment around him.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Hillsid...7158849&sr=1-1

Another book I have just finished is A year in Christines Garden, by Christine Walkden. I Wish I had waited until it was available from the library and not paid for it.

It starts of with her all emotional and wound up after being told they want to film her and appears to decend into many endless dash's from one job to another and endless comments on how old her dog is and wont be around for much longer.

Again if you have watched the series you might find it interesting when she go'es into more detail about place's they film her at, the book also in ties up a few loose ends that the TV series leaves.

An ok read.

(she also mentions in the book about the abusive comments she read about herself on the BBC Gardening website)

Default Allotted time confusion

Read most of this book around bonfire night, picked it up a couple of weeks ago but this time read all of the acknowledgements and it says " thanks to **** and **** for digging the plot. If the book is true to life then a large part is saying how they had got on digging the plot but not a mention of anyone else helping them, this spoilt it for me and i gave the book way without finishing it.

Ah, but did they mean literally digging the plot, or 'digging the plot' in the hippy sense....

I have just read Allotted Time, the reviews on the back said about their first radishes......
did I miss the radish bit in my book? could find no mention of them.
I like the book, but whats this about them not doing all the digging! hmmmmm
that might spoil my views, I thought it was just them doing the work?

I read the book Allotted Time too. It was alright I guess. Me and my hubbie always joke about the 'friends' that turn up (especially on tv) to help people out, work all day then everyone has a party afterwards and eat lots of food and beer. I was in hospital for 3 weeks around the time everything in allotment had to be planted. All the promises that people gave us before I went in never materialised and in the end Ian and his mum with her bad back did it all , including planting 4 30 foot rows of spuds. Where do people find these mates?
