Have you filled it up with petrol, love? Sorry couldn't resist, naughty me!

What about the spark plug, does it have one, need cleaning?

I struggled to start the one I borrowed too (in fact I had to get my lottie neighbour to be all manly and do it for me ). The issue in my case was that one of the switches that was supposed to 'stick' wasn't, so it really needed either three arms or a very quick reflex! Don't know if that's any help really

The problem is, the pull cord, when you pull it to start the engine it appears not to grip anything inside, and just slides i dont know how the mechanics work, does this to make any sense.

I'd take it to be repaired, most agricultural wholesalers, could point you in the right direction of a local fixer, or call into a lawn mower supplier, they normally do repairs aswell.

It might well say on the petrol cap, if not 1/40, oil/petrol is a general rule of thumb.
