Default pond membrane
Can anyone recommend a supplier of pond membrane. My son, who is 12, has dug a pond in the back garden (it kept him quiet for 3 hours!!) i don't want to spend much. also, how on earth do you measure the thing??!!

Chiltern Aquatics are right next to our allotments. I was going to ask them if they had any spare "cut-offs" I could use.

It's worth covering the sides of the hole with something before you put the liner in, to stop any stones or sharp objects from puncturing it when the water stretches it taught.

Also, don't trim off the excess liner until you've put the water in!

I have always used Fawcetts, excellent product and service. My current pond liner has been in for 5 years now with no issues at all.

can I line it with old carpet before putting the liner in?

Can do, but carpet can leak chemicals into the soil as it degrades. Labdscaping fabric (like a thick weedproof membrane) would be my first choice.

Another option is a good layer of damp sand across the hole 2.5cm thick or so. As was mentioned, just stops the sharp stones putting a hole in the membrane when the weight of the water presses down.
