    Zazen, it's your fault

    I'd never heard of the phrase Nom Nom until Zazen used it on here. But it seemed perfect: and became shorthand for anything that was tasty ('do you want nom nom for dinner?')

    I got the parrot to say "coffee" then "cuppa coffee", then "coffee, nom nom"

    Now, I only have to switch the kettle on and she says "nom nom"

    She also uses it for treats, eg peanuts (her favourite). Quick video clip here

    I should say that her latest phrase is "you bugger bugger"

        Trouble is, TS, that 'nom nom' originated in the US.
        Hate to spoil a good phrase for your parrot.
        I should mention here that there was a Himalayan ringneck on my bird feeder first thing this morning - a gorgeous exotic flash of green.
        Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

          I have seen it in use for years though I do play on line games so that is why.

          Now TS we all know where the parrot got the second phrase. Thankfully cats, snakes and fish can't do that so I am safe from pets that would use language that would make the devil blush, let alone a sailor, as what comes out of me when I stub my toe is atrocious.

          Come to think of it. Why is toe stubbing so painful? I am prone to cramps in my leg and still it is nothing compared to a toe stubbing.

              Our Grand-daughter used to say num num, as a version of yum yum, when she ate something nice. My daughter used to say Yum yum to her when the spoon went in! She came to assume the word meant 'eat'. At not quite 2 years old, we were in a pub on holiday having a meal, and they had an African Grey, which was tucking in to a slice of apple. She ran up to me, took me by the hand and said, 'Gan, Paddad num a battle!' (Gran, parrot eating an apple!)

              Non-one in this family can now eat an apple without declaiming the phrase!

                    My Dad was Polish and never did speak english without a thick accent and he said nom nom so maybe the americans got it from the poles

                        My son started using it at secondary school, and still does when I phone him and he talks about food.
                        I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

                          I just played that on my new pooter: talk about panic, I couldn't find the volume control (have now)

                          and now I've managed to make the type super-big: how do I turn that down? (turn off, turn on?)

                              Years back I had a slightly odd neighbour (she was a vegetarian too, but I don't think the oddness was anything to do with that) who had done the Hippie Trail to India before settling down and having a family. The whole family used 'Namnam' for assorted food related situations (mainly as a call to eat and such), and we thought it derived from her days in India, but it turned out to have been her own invention!
                              Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
